Current Event: Chipotle becomes first major restaurant chain to serve only GMO-free food
Mexican fast food chain Chipotle will now only serve non-GMO, or genetically modified, food and will not use GMO ingredients in any it serves. Chipotle had previously been the first fast food chain to disclose all GMO ingredients in their menu in 2013. Chipotle's co-CEO Steve Ells told the Times, "Just because food is served fast doesn't mean it has to be made with cheap raw ingredients highly processed with preservatives and fillers and stabilizers and artificial colors and flavors. Chipotle's pork and chicken will still be fed GMO food but have been successful in replacing GMO ingredients like soybean oil with sunflower oil. Foods made from GMO ingredients have not been scientifically proven to be unsafe however. Chipotle seems to be marketing their exclusion of GMO ingredients in order to cater to the population who are wary of eating genetically modified food and want to know what exactly is in the food they are eating.

I really like you described the way that the restaurant chipotle is somewhat safe, do you feel like GMO will be benefiting or not? should other restaurants do this as well?
ReplyDeleteHonestly I've only ate at Chipotle once in my whole entire life, though I can say that they're food is pretty good. Is good to know that restaurants like Chipotle start being more considerate of the way they make their foods. In my opinion I wouldn't like to serve food that I myself wouldn't eat if I knew the exact ingredients. I'm glad I read this article now I know that if one of these days if I go to Chipotle it'll be safe! :)

ReplyDeleteSomething to think about: most of what you eat comes from a GMO. There has also been EXTENSIVE research by SCIENTISTS concluding that the fear of GMOs is almost completely unsubstantiated. Along with vaccinations and gluten, the GMO health scare was brought about largely by people with no background in science - they read a tweet and assumed it was fact. Remember the article I showed you guys at the beginning of the year from Vice - fake news and information is out there every day and people are taking it as fact. Just because something seems like it's going against popular opinion does not mean that it's incorrect.

Do you think other fast food joints will start to providing GMO-free food? Since Chipotle will receive more customers due to healthy and tasting food.
